WREXHAM will be unchanged for the third match in a row tonight when they take on League Two strugglers Torquay United at Plainmoor.

Manager Denis Smith, who for the first time since the start of the season has a clean bill of health at the club, said there was no reason to tinker with the side that followed up a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City with Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup second round success at Scunthorpe United.

After strikers Lee McEvilly and Juan Ugarte both figured briefly at Glanford Park, the Racecourse boss received more good news yesterday when club captain Neil Roberts and winger Matty Done returned to training and are set to play in tomorrow evening’s reserve-team match against Oldham Athletic at Globe Way, Buckley.

But following four months of injury woes, Smith is not counting his chickens just yet.

"Not having anyone in the treatment room is a first for us this season," he said. "But I’m not going to get carried away because it’s not Wednesday yet.

"As we speak, both Neil and Matty have a chance of being involved with the reserves and as far as Torquay is concerned I would be silly to make any changes if I don’t have to because I have been more than happy with each of our last three performances."

The Dragons, whose only league win away from the Racecourse thus far came at Chester back in August, are confident their fortunes are now on an upward curve and the manager said the reasons were evident.

"Everyone is pleased to see players back from long injury spells and that’s been shown in recent performances," he added. "Mark Jones, who is very much a confidence player, has scored two goals in the last two games and is looking as sharp as he was at the beginning of the season.

"We missed Chris Llewellyn when he was suspended for three matches and Kevin Smith now has the match fitness he was lacking when he first came to us. All that means that the other lads have people to play off and the partnership at the back between Shaun Pejic and Steve Evans is paying dividends too.

"Mike Ingham has confidence in the players in front of him, which has been reflected in his displays, and although he is still young in terms of goalkeepers he is increasingly able to handle the responsibility.

"And while Lee Roche has been written off by some because he’s had a lot of injury problems during the past 18 months, he is a class player in this league and he is now demonstrating that and is improving with every game that he gets under his belt."

Wrexham are travelling today and will stay overnight in Torquay as Smith attempts to keep his squad fresh for another long journey to Boston United on Saturday.

"It means everyone will have a good night’s rest, as opposed to getting home in the early hours of Wednesday for just a few hours sleep," he said.

"We will then have one day working on Thursday before travelling to Boston on Friday, which is not ideal planning, but if we get the right result at Torquay then Saturday will look after itself to some extent."

Opponents Torquay, who have not won a league match since their 1-0 win against Mansfield Town on September 15, face an FA Cup replay at Leyton Orient following Saturday’s 1-1 draw, their first outing since former Czech international Lubos Kubik was appointed manager.

And the new boss has injury headaches of his own after leading scorer Jamie Ward – a summer target for Wrexham – limped off after scoring a penalty. With loan midfielder Michael Leary returning to his club Luton Town, Kubik could have only 15 fit senior players, including two goalkeepers, this evening.

But he has extended the loan of 18-year-old striker Jordan Robertson from Sheffield United, while Southampton’s Wales under-21 midfielder Kyle Critchell stays until at least the January transfer window.
