THEY were falling over themselves to have a go at Nantwich's skate park which was officially opened on Saturday.

The sports arena on the Barony Park was opened by the Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Terry Beard, and youngsters of all ages were just dying to be the first to test their skills.

Cllr Arthur Moran, who backed a 300-strong petition by Nantwich children four years ago demanding the facility, said: 'It has been a long time coming but it was obviously worth waiting for.

'The response was overwhelming and already it is becoming a borough facility with youngsters from all over the district coming into Nantwich to try it out.'

The complex has facilities for both roller hockey and fun skating and will be completed with the opening a fitness suite and sports changing rooms in about a month's time.

Nantwich youngsters began a campaign for a skate park four years ago. Their plea was also backed by the police.

Yesterday, Nantwich town beat officer PC Rick Johnson said: 'I am delighted the skate park is open at last. The youngsters were right in what they said in the first place.

'They didn't have anywhere to skate except on the streets and the supermarket car parks.

'Judging by the first couple of days the facilities are going to be well used.'
