SINGERS from an Ellesmere Port choir have signed up to perform in the Chester Mystery Plays this summer.

At least 15 members of the Fireflies choir have joined the chorus of the mystery plays, which will be performed at Chester Cathedral in June and July.

Secretary Pat Tripney said: “It was a purely individual choice as most of those involved have already done some work with composer Matt Baker in the past.

“A few of us were in A Christmas Carol just before Christmas and that sparked an interest in doing the mystery plays.”

The singers met other members of the cast at a get-together at St Mary’s Centre in Chester on Sunday and even got to sing some of the new songs from the plays.

“I love the music,” said Pat, who also performed in Theatre in the Quarter’s James and The Chester Giants. “It is going to be amazing.”

The next six months will be packed for the Fireflies, as the choir recently secured a grant of almost £7,000 from the BBC Performing Arts Fund to create an anthem about Ellesmere Port.

The project is a partnership between Chester composer Matt Baker, community theatre company Theatre in the Quarter and writer Janys Chambers.

Chester Mystery Plays will be performed in the nave of Chester Cathedral from June 26-July 13. Tickets are available by calling 01244 500959 or at www.chestermysteryplays.com.
