A GREEN scheme in Ellesmere Port has picked up a cash windfall to help it grow even more successful.

Eleven Cheshire communities celebrated Christmas a little earlier thanks to Landfill Communities Fund Grants totalling £276,977.

The awards were made by distributive environmental body WREN during the final funding round of 2007.

Among the beneficiaries is the borough council-run Rivacre Nature Reserve, which gets £35,066.

The money is generated by Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG) landfill operations throughout the UK.

Richard Smith, WREN project manager, said: “I am really pleased that we have been able to end the year with our largest grant allocation of 2007, which should make a real difference to a number of Cheshire communities.

“We have also just announced details of the 2008 WRG Communities Challenge will allows applications for grants of up to £250,000.”

Next deadline for applications to WREN is January 8, 2008 and community groups are being encouraged to come forward with applications for capital projects for throughout 2008.

WREN staff are happy to give support and advice to anyone thinking of making an application. For further information, visit the website www.wren.org.uk
