REPAIRS are under way to Westminster Bridge in Ellesmere Port after cracking and loose concrete was spotted.

The bridge carries the A5032 Whitby Road over the Ellesmere Port to Frodsham railway line and the existing north pier is in poor condition.

Whitby Road will remain open at all times throughout the works, as will both footpaths except when minor maintenance is carried out to the one adjacent to the north supporting wall.

That footpath may close for two weeks near the end of the contract period, expected to finish in the autumn.

Work to the pier involves propping the bridge for safety reasons, breaking out loose concrete and carrying out concrete repairs.

The propping will be removed once the repairs to the pier have been completed.

Local councillor Lynn Clare said: “The repair work has been under way since the end of last month and will be completed in the autumn.

“Westminster Bridge carries a main route into the town and is used by thousands of vehicles a day.

“I am extremely pleased that the work does not involve the closure of the road and footpaths although one of the footpaths will be affected for two weeks as the repair contract draws to a close.”
