A GROUP giving older men in Ellesmere Port a place to enjoy a host of activities will hold a race night.

Men in Sheds in Ellesmere Port are urging those who fancy a flutter to join them for a charity race night on Friday, April 19 from 7.45pm.

The event is being held at The Groves Social Club, Chester Road in Ellesmere Port and all proceeds will go to Age Concern Cheshire.

The night includes a buffet and the chance to bet on up to eight races, each being sponsored by businesses including Adhire, Ellesmere Port Insulation and Mersey Signs. Prizes include a bottle of Moet champagne, cases of wine, gardening tools and cash prizes, all generously donated by race sponsors.

Age UK Cheshire launched The Men in Sheds project in 2008 for older men who feel isolated or are experiencing major life changes, providing a place to share and learn new skills and socialise.

The shed received funding from the National Lottery and now provides workshop facilities for men over the age of 55, including woodwork, computer facilities and a book and DVD lending library.

Steve Thrower, Ellesmere Port Shed co-ordinator said: “We’re really looking forward to the race night, it’s a fantastic opportunity to have a guilt-free flutter on the races, as all proceeds go towards improving the facilities in the shed and providing more opportunities for the men. We have all types of people coming to the shed; they may be suffering from bereavement, depression or might have had a serious long term health issue, but all tell me what a difference the shed has made to their lives.”

If you are interested in going to the race night, tickets can be bought in advance or on the night; please contact Steve Thrower on 0151 3572098 or 07807 732312 for further information.
