THE 2008 Summer Reading Challenge was a great success with more Wrexham children taking part since the scheme began a decade ago.

Children from 49 schools took part in Team Read, this year’s Olympic-inspired challenge, which was launched alongside the Beijing Olympics and gave readers the chance to win a bronze, silver and gold medal of their own.

Schools encouraged their pupils to take part in the scheme by reading books and visiting their local library throughout the summer holidays.

The schools with the most gold medallists were, in order, Ysgol ID Hooson CP, Ysgol Penrhyn CP, Ysgol Maes y Llan, Cefn Mawr CP School, Black Lane CP School, Johnstown Juniors School, Ysgol Penycae CP, Ysgol Maes y Mynydd, Ysgol Bryn Tabor and Ceiriog Junior School.

The next reading challenge will be launched in July 2009. For more information on the Summer Reading Challenge, contact your local school or library, or call Wrexham Library on 01978 292090.
