A pair of students from Coleg Cambria Northop enjoyed international sporting success recently after bringing home medals from the Special Olympics.

Peter Millar, 21, from Birkenhead, claimed first place in the singles tennis after beating players from Switzerland, Monaco and the Netherlands in the competition.

Peter said: “I love sport, it’s my life. I love competing too. I want to do something with my life that’s amazing and I really enjoy representing Coleg Cambria and Great Britain.”

Ellesmere Port student Sarah Mathers, 20, won the 600 metre Power Race in Reutlingen, Germany.

Reutlingen is twinned with Ellesmere Port and the team were able to spend some time with local young people who also have learning disabilities.

They visited a museum and took part in art and music workshops during their time in Germany.

They also attended an official reception at the Town Hall and met with the Head of Culture and Development.

Sarah added: “I’m really energetic and I don’t like sitting at home being bored, I prefer to be doing something active. I love sport, Peter and I have become great friends and are interested in each other’s competitions and we always wish each other good luck!”

Peter and Sarah’s tutor, Lyn Morris, commented: “Coleg Cambria is very proud of Peter and Sarah’s achievements in the Special Olympics. Their recent successes are remarkable accomplishments and reflect some of the skills attained through their education at college.”
