PLANS for two permanent Gypsy and Travellers sites in Winsford have received unexpected public support.

Vale Royal Borough Council’s executive group could give the go-ahead to controversial proposals for four permanent camps in Mid Cheshire at a meeting tomorrow (Thursday).

The results of an “extensive” public consultation, which will be presented to the executive meeting at Wyvern House, confirm planned sites at Chester Road, Sandiway and Saxons Lane, Northwich are deeply unpopular.

But the majority of respondents said two sites off New Road in Winsford would be “suitably located” and would provide better provision for Travellers, with “good and safe access to major roads”.

The results will come as a blow to town councillors and MP Stephen O’Brien, who are against the plans.

Mayor Des Worthington said: “The town council strongly objects to these proposals.

“I can’t understand why people are saying these are suitable areas. One of them is right by the Winsford Gateway and the new Learning Zone, it doesn’t add up.”

One concern across the board was that permanent Gypsy sites would not reduce the risk of unauthorised camps being set up.

A Vale Royal spokeswoman said final decisions could be made tomorrow.

She added: “The consultation process has been extensive and generated a huge response. The executive group meeting is the first opportunity for members to consider all the collected information.”
