Youngsters in the town could have a leg up in the technological world they face thanks to MP Andrew Miller .

Mr Miller, who is also chairman of the House of Commons science and technology committee, took part in a Parliamentary event run by computer giant Samsung Electronics and the Code Club to discover more about their work.

MPs heard the Code Club runs a nationwide network of over 1,300 volunteer-led after school computer coding clubs for children aged 9-11 and aims to encourage more volunteers to run clubs in schools across the UK.

It argues children should understand that they are in charge of their computer and can and should make it do what they want, not the other way around.

Projects teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites.

Samsung’s partnership with Code Club is part of its work to help young people gain the digital skills they need for careers in technology.

The partnership between the two companies will increase Code Club’s reach by opening five new regional centres, equipped with Samsung laptops, where more volunteers can be trained to run future clubs, MPs heard.

At the event, Mr Miller nominated Thelwall Road Community Centre in Ellesmere Port as a contender to become one of the new centres.

“I fully endorse the work Samsung and Code Club are doing to foster digital skills and prepare young people for a career in a technology driven world,” said Mr Miller.

“That’s why I have nominated Thelwall Road Community Centre to be considered for a new Code Club regional centre to help encourage others to volunteer and widen the reach of this great initiative.

“It's vital that children are prepared for the world ahead and feel inspired to build and share the technologies that will shape our future.”
