BEWARE of conmen on your doorstep, say police.

There has been a spate of incidents involving bogus callers preying on Cheshire people living on their own.

Last week, in the east of the county, four homes were hit by a gang of three men pretending to be from a utility company.

The men convinced residents to let them inside before stealing items from around the house. The gang have Irish accents, wear baseball caps and drive a grey VW Golf.

Detective Insp Nigel Groom said: “The simplest way to beat this type of criminal is to make sure they don’t come into your home.

“If the callers produce identity cards, ask them to wait outside while you call the company to see if they are genuine.”

Neighbours are urged to keep an eye on one another’s homes - and to keep a special look out for vulnerable neighbours.
