POLICE carried out vehicle checks at Neston High School to ensure the safety of child passengers.

The checks formed part of Operation Coachman, a national campaign during the first week of March to improve the road worthiness of vehicles used for transporting young children to and from places of education.

Taxis, coaches, minibuses and drivers used to transport children were examined to ensure they were on the road legally.

Headquarters Road Policing Unit, Western and Eastern Area Road Policing Investigation Unit and the HQ Commercial Vehicle Unit worked alongside agencies including Vehicle and Operators Services Agency, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and council road safety officers.

Checks were also conducted in Hartford and Knutsford.

Of the 52 vehicles stopped and checked, action was taken against 14 drivers. Those with defective vehicles – which ranged from brakes, defective tyres, lighting and emissions – were issued with fixed penalty notices or cautioned with a view to repairing defects.
