AN 11-year-old boy, who died after an overdose of pills, may have been experimenting with painkillers, it emerged today.

Thomas Welsh, also known as Thompson, died in Arrowe Park hospital, after taking tablets at home in Wallasey.

A Wallasey inquest heard he had also taken some of the same pills 24 hours before, which contributed to his death.

Wir ral coroner Christopher Johnson said: "There is no evidence he took an overdose to end his life. Tragically, the full circumstances will never be known.

"He may have been experimenting."

Thomas, a pupil at Wallasey School, was found by his mother Sandra Thompson, in his bedroom in Beechcroft Road on July 2.

His lips had turned blue and empty packets of tablets were strewn next to his bedside with a glass of milk.

His mother told police he did not want to go to school as he was being bullied.

The inquest heard he did not go to school that day and missed other lessons.

But a police investigation did not reveal any bullying.

Mr Johnson recorded an open verdict.

Thomas's father, Andrew Welsh, from Newton-le-Willows, said: "It's clear he was happy at school."

Mrs Thompson said: "I still believe Thomas had problems at school."
