A PETITION is calling for a competition sized pool to be included in plans for a £14m sports village in Ellesmere Port.

Concerns have been raised that the 25m pool included in current plans is ‘inadequate’ and the petition demands council chiefs consider a 50m competition pool.

In the petition, Ellesmere Port Amateur Swimming Club, said: “We firmly believe that a 50m pool with the appropriate spectator provision would be the best option and would make the proposed sports village one of the finest sports venues in the north of England.

“We have the support of the City of Chester Swimming Club and the Chester Triathletes, while the North Wales clubs have also indicated they would welcome the opportunity of long course swim training.

“CWaC have a real opportunity to build on the ‘Olympic Legacy’ of the summer by providing a top class arena for the local athletes of tomorrow and an opportunity to make the proposed Sports Village one of the finest sports venues in the north of England.”

Construction of the sports village should begin in autumn 2013, with the building opening in spring 2015.

The public consultation will close on Friday, November 30. View the petition online at www.sinkorswim.org.uk/petition
