A primary school joined forces with a professional theatre company to create a new show involving the whole school.

Parklands Power was devised by children at Parklands Community Primary on Parklands, Little Sutton who teamed up with Whitby Park based Action Transport Theatre.

Throughout the school year, representatives from the theatre visited the school to work with every class from the nursery to Year 6.

The children developed their own sections of the show based on their own thoughts, feelings, contributions and ideas.

Working alongside Jenny Harris from Action Transport Theatre, each class designed and produced their own section of the show which was performed to friends and family at the University Church of England Academy in Ellesmere Port.

The theme of Parklands Power was superheroes and the children explored some of the qualities of superheroes themselves including team work, bravery, kindness, strength and resilience.

Zac in Year 5 said: “When we went on for our Parklands Power song it felt like I was on the X Factor in London!”

Shakiera in Year 6 agreed, saying: “Before I knew it, it was over. Everyone was cheering!

“It was the best show ever that we have done. I felt like I had won a football medal.”

The purpose of the production was to give the Parklands pupils the opportunity to perform in a theatre environment, for them to recognise the special skills and qualities they had inside themselves and to help them to feel even prouder of themselves and their school.

Cllr Nicole Meardon, (Lab, Sutton) who attended the performance, said: “It was great to see such innovative and inclusive work happening in our schools. I thought the children were fantastic!”

The project was supported by The Big Lottery Fund Awards for All.
