EMERGENCY teams swung into operation after a lorry carrying nuclear material broke down in Great Sutton.

The HGV, laden with low-level waste in a “nuclear flask” container, suffered a mechanical failure shortly after leaving the Capenhurst nuclear facility.

Headed towards Sellafield in Cumbria, it came to a halt at 6.23am today (Wednesday) on the A41 between the A5117 and Hope Farm Road, Great Sutton.

But while every precaution was taken to ensure the incident was kept safe, the emergency services stressed there was no leak or contamination of any kind, and no-one was ever in any danger.
