A Northwich resident celebrated her 101st birthday in the best way possible – with champagne and cake.

Constance Eunice Done - better known as Connie and originally from Davenham - is a resident at HC One’s Daneside Court Care Home and celebrated her big day surrounded by her family and friends.

Entertainment was provided by Connie’s son Robert, who sang to his mother and entertained everyone with his lovely voice.

The care home’s chef also prepared a Manchester United cake for Connie, who is a lifelong supporter of the club. She also received a congratulatory letter from the Queen.

Connie was born in Faraday Road, in Winnington, the third of seven children born to Thomas and Annie Hubball.

She attended Winnington School where she was the only pupil to receive a certificate for seven years of perfect attendance.

Connie left school at 14 and went on to work at Broadhurst biscuit factory. As a teenager she attended Kitty Oakes School of Dance where she learned ballroom dancing.

She went to a dance at the Baths Hall where she met her future husband George Done, from Winsford. They married on August 27, 1938.

A year later George was called up to fight in the war. He trained with the Royal Marines, Commando Division, based in Plymouth. At one stage he was missing in action for three months, but he eventually returned to his wife.

During the war Connie made bombs at Risley before being transferred to ICI where she worked in the bicarb department. She was voted Woman of the Year at the works during her time there.

At the end of the war the couple returned to Fairholme Road and enjoyed 64 years of marriage before George died aged 87.

The family enjoyed touring and camping around the UK and bought a caravan in Towyn, in North Wales, which Connie visited earlier this year.

Connie’s daughter Shelagh Done said: “Everyone enjoyed the celebrations and said they will all remember it for a long time. It was lovely to see that people remembered all the words to the songs and sang along.

“Mother had a lovely afternoon and with Robert singing, she really enjoyed it.”

Daneside Court Care Home manager Jo Farrell said: “All the residents had a wonderful afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed the sing along with Connie’s son.”

HC-One managing director Glen Mason added: “It sounds as if everyone had a great time celebrating Connie’s 101st birthday. Celebrating special occasions as well as organising memorable events and activities is an important part of how HC-One provides the kindest care.”
