A DONATION has enabled a school to show its green credentials with pride.

Brookside Primary School in Ellesmere Port can fly its Green Flag award now a flagpole has been erected in its grounds.

The Green Flag was awarded for the school’s green policy and the pole was funded by local Sutton ward councillor Paul Donovan from his special member budget fund.

Cllr Donovan said: “I thought the flagpole idea was fantastic because it proudly marks the school’s wonderful achievement.

“Their green agenda is really a lesson to us all and what they are doing is having a big impact on school life. Well done to everyone and I hope their success continues to grow.”

Wild habitats have been created in the school’s grounds which have won a Cheshire Gold Wildlife award and Green Natural England.

Year 4 pupils made bird boxes with council rangers and nursery children made bird food. There is a bird box web cam and the school has chickens each class looks after in turn.

Four recycling bins have been bought, litter collections take place and water butts collect rainwater which is used in the garden and the school also uses composting.

Each year group has a vegetable bed, there is a gardening club and the school has gained Royal Horticultural Society Levels 1-4.

Headteacher Michael Rodgers said: “I am very proud that Brookside Primary School has been awarded the Green Flag.

“Our school bursar Gill Griffiths deserves a huge thank you for all the hard work she has done to help improve the environmental education at Brookside.”

Produce has been displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show and vegetables are grown and used to create school dinners. Produce is sold to parents and the community and fruit trees and bushes have been planted.
