The newly-formed Frodsham junior volleyball team entered their first tournament and were pitched against nine experienced primary school teams from the Wigan and Greater Manchester area.

The tournament was part of Volleyball England’s Let’s Play Volleyball festival and was played on grass at Leigh Sports Village in Greater Manchester.

The team consisted of Tegan Lovett (Delamere Academy), Thomas Lovett (Ashton Hayes Primary), Daniel McGovern and Chloe Wiffin (Kingsley Community Primary) and Charlie Ashbrook (Frodsham CE Primary).

In the morning pool matches they came up against some tough opposition and struggled to score many points in the few sets.

Captain Daniel kept a cool head and helped the team to find their feet and gain confidence as the morning went on.

Thanks to Charlie’s consistent serving and some great team work all round, Frodsham managed to pull back some points to narrowly lose out to some of the stronger teams 13-15.

Frodsham failed to win any games in the morning so progressed to the Shield competition in the afternoon, sets were now played to 25 points.

Chloe really found her feet in the afternoon and thanks to some excellent serving from Thomas and outstanding overall game play from Tegan the team fought hard to be narrowly defeated 24-25 by the team that went on to win the Shield.

With renewed confidence the team went on to claim their first victory, a very exciting and well deserved win.

Coaches Jane and Jenny were very proud of the team’s resilience and attitude.

The opposition was tough but the team members were mentally strong and tried their best to use the skills they have been practicing in training.

Some of the volleyball played on the day was very impressive and it will be exciting to see how the team progresses now it has had its first taste of the standard of primary schools volleyball in the North West.

Training is at Frodsham Leisure centre on Monday’s from 5-6pm in term time only and costs £3.
