PARENTS who fail to send their children to school could be sent to prison as Cheshire County Council cracks down on truancy.

A number of parents have recently been successfully prosecuted and fined for failing to secure the attendance of their children at school. One mum was even handed a prison sentence totalling five months.

Cheshire County Council solicitor Andrew Laing said: “The message to parents who fail to ensure the regular attendance of their children at school is clear.

“The authority will not back away from prosecuting habitual offenders who may be fined heavily or, as one mother found to her cost, face a stiff prison sentence.”

The mum was one of five cases in the Crewe area.

Other parents were dealt with individually and each one faced £300 in fines and costs, a total of £600 from the family purse.

The county is now warning this could strike in the Mid Cheshire region too.
