TWO goals in a quarter of an hour towards the end condemned Porthmadog to another defeat in front of their own fans and exacerbated concerns about their lowly league position.

Yet in between Carmarthen’s strikes on 63 and 77 minutes, the Traeth hosts had a couple of chances which brought miscues – and they proved to be costly.

Manager Viv Williams said: “I cannot fault the players for the effort they put in, but those chances are the kind that we have to take.

“The original header was good enough and when the goalkeeper parried the loose ball a tap-in was on offer but it was not taken.

“We shaded the first half and deserved the lead we had at that time, but were forced on to the back-foot later, apart from a five minute spell.

“These things happen to a team down there near the bottom, but we are still fighting and there were some positives to come out of this performance.”

After an early threat by Paul Roberts, who shot straight at ‘keeper Neil Thomas, Carmarthen countered through Sasha Walters whose well-struck rebounded back from the frame of the Porthmadog goal.

The deadlock was broken by Porthmadog’s Warren Beattie on 24 minutes, when he skipped past a defender to score from an angled 15 yards.

Carmarthen were back on level terms through Danny Thomas just past the hour, but Porthmadog were killed off by Walters, whose shot from more than 25 yards was either audacious or speculative but, nevertheless it proved to be a wonderful winner.
