THE wheels are in motion to get free town centre car parking introduced in time for Christmas.

Last week we reported how councillors had unanimously agreed to support the proposal put forward by council leader Justin Madders during a recent environment committee meeting.

The move would see the main town centre car park at Asda made completely free, although there would be a four-hour limit due to an existing agreement in place with the supermarket.

To get the scheme in force over the festive period the three relevant meetings have been specially brought forward.

The highways committee will meet tonight (Wednesday) at 6.15pm, with a resources meeting and an extra-ordinary full council meeting taking place respectively tomorrow evening.
