PEOPLE living rough on the streets of Wrexham are being urged to make use of the support services on offer to them.

Several homeless people have been spotted sleeping in the car park of the Careers Wales building on the corner of Egerton Street and at several other venues in the town centre.

And now organisations are urging those who find themselves in this situation to contact them to try to resolve their problems.

Janet Oldfield, acting regional director of Shelter in North Wales said: 'There is the issue that in a lot of places there are not a lot of suitable places for accommodation for those with high support needs.

'We want to get the message across that there is support available for those who find themselves in this situation and we offer an open door drop-in service for those in need.

'We try to do what we can to encourage these people to seek support and what services are available to them.'

Suzanne Metcalfe, business manager at the Careers Wales building in Wrexham, where many people have been seen sleeping rough, said: 'We at Careers Wales have genuine sympathy for those who find themselves homeless and we have a number of initiatives on offer for those who find it difficult to find work.

'But there is an element of those causing us problems. We are at present discussing issues to resolve the problem.

'We have contacted police but as the ground is private property there is nothing they can do. They are not causing us any undue concern by using the area to sleep in, and they do move on when we ask them to.

'If there are problems, the community police officer is out straight away to resolve the problem.

'The police are monitoring the situation here as best they can, as they are at the bus station.'

A spokeswoman for Wrexham Council added: 'We have not been made aware of any problems but we can only urge those who are homeless to contact either Shelter our own housing department in order to try and find the best way to resolve their situation.' Shelter Cymru, based on Abbot Street in Wrexham, can be contacted on 01978 353649. The centre is also open from 10am-2pm Monday to Friday.
