DAVID BECKHAM defended another under-par England performance after beating Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 to book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence's hopes of helping to pull off a famous upset were dashed as Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard ended England's frustrations with two late goals after a second tournament win looked in doubt in Nuremberg.

The Liverpool pair scored in the 83rd and 91st minutes respectively after the introduction of Wayne Rooney had brought more urgency from those around him.

Beckham said: "We never give up - that's the message we always give out. We knew it would be tough and people expect it to be tough.

"We knew it was going to be a hard game and they would get 11 men behind the ball and so it proved."
