FOUR of the five Gypsy sites proposed by Vale Royal Borough Council have been thrown out – but one in Winsford remains a possibility.

Planned camps at Chester Road, Sandiway and Saxons Lane in Northwich were scrapped at a meeting of the borough’s executive committee last Thursday at Wyvern House, along with a site in Frodsham.

Two locations either end of New Road in Winsford were considered at greater length, with the committee deciding to press ahead with proposals for the New Road North project.

The site at the other end was deemed unsuitable as it is part of the Winsford Waterfront regeneration.

Further investigation will take place into the feasibility of a camp for three caravans at the former Cheshire County Council household waste site.

Winsford Mayor Cllr Des Worthington said: “This site is only yards from the extremely busy main road. In my view it’s not fit for human habitation.”

Eddisbury MP Stephen O’Brien, whose constituency covers Sandiway and Winsford, welcomed the shelving of the Chester Road proposals and vowed to continue fighting plans for the Winsford site.

He said: “The selection criteria, and consultation process, was flawed from the outset and continues to be so.”

But Vale Royal’s lead councillor for community safeguards, Cllr John Turnbull, countered: “From the start of this process we took a decision to conduct wide and extensive public consultation, aiming to reach as many people as we could to find out their views.”
