THIEVES have stolen around forty metal drain covers from Barnton, Cuddington and Weaverham over the past week.

Cheshire County Council is warning the thefts are “extremely dangerous”, and is asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact police immediately.

“Lives are being put at risk by this stupidity,” said Cheshire’s executive member for Highways and Transportation Eveleigh Moore-Dutton.

“Obviously the gulley grid covers are being sold as scrap without a second thought that their removal could seriously injure or kill someone.

“Unfortunately Council Tax payers will also foot the bill for the missing covers - which cost £200 each to replace.”
