BOROUGH MP Andrew Miller is urging garages locally to sign up to the new scheme designed to improve standards in the UK.

The code of practice was recently launched, together with an enforcement regime, to address sub-standard service which costs motorists an estimated £4 billion a year nationally.

Mr Miller said: “I am pleased to see the motor industry has developed this code so people can have confidence in the garage they select to take their vehicles to.

“To find a garage which has signed up to the scheme, visit www.motorindustry codes. co.uk, or call 0800 692 0825.

“I hope local garages will look carefully at the scheme and sign up to it.”

Consumer Minister Gareth Thomas said: “When you book your car in for a service or repair, it can be a lottery whether you get a good deal or are taken for a ride.

“This tough new scheme will drive out the cowboy garages that charge for unnecessary work or miss major faults through incompetence.

“Regular inspections, a helpline for advice and a searchable guide will help people to get a good deal and help garages to raise consumer confidence in their services.”

The new code commits garages to honest and fair services, open and transparent pricing, completing work as agreed, invoices that match quoted prices, competent and conscientious staff and a straightforward, swift complaint procedure.

It offers motorists an on-line search facility, a free consumer advice line and free consultation and low cost, legally binding arbitration.
