Frodsham Town Council’s commemoration working group’s planned programme of events to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War is well under way.

The group formed in July 2013 and is comprised of councillors Pammi Taylor, Linda Brown, Fran Sutton, Sara Wakefield and Allen Wales, interested individuals and representatives of local community groups, including Frodsham Library and Frodsham and District History Society.

Cllr Pammi Taylor said: “Frodsham Town Council set up the group in July 2013 to develop and implement a programme of events and activities involving the community to commemorate the start of the First World War.”

The group kicked things off by distributing, free of charge, poppy seeds to households and local schools for people to grow their own gardens of remembrance.

In late March, Mayor of Frodsham Sara Wakefield and other members of the group presented 39 books related to the First World War to Frodsham Library at a talk by author Tim Lynch on the war’s impact on communities to a packed audience.

Frodsham District Guides and Brownies have taken part in the programme, by scattering poppy seeds at the Overton Hill Memorial Field, organised by tree warden Tom Blundell.

The commemoration group will be joined by army cadets, who have prepared the seed and sand mixture, and local Scout groups to sow more poppy seeds around the fenced-off Beech tree in Castle Park on Monday, May 19.

Commemorative bookmarks purchased by the council are to be presented to pupils in the town’s four primary schools.

Frodsham Library is hosting an exhibition of First World War memorabilia collected by the group until the end of July.

Also on the horizon are remembrance services in August and November, First World War film screenings and a concert organised by the Royal British Legion at Frodsham Community Centre on June 27, at which Frodsham CE Primary School, Frodsham Silver Band and Highfield Male Choir will perform.

The group is still appealing for contributions of First World War-related photographs, letters and accounts of relatives who served in the war or were conscientious objectors for inclusion in the commemorative book.
