The former president and captain of Helsby Golf Club has received his MBE medal from the Queen in recognition for his work in helping to raise thousands of pounds for children with special needs.

Alan Lee, of Little Barrow, was delighted to receive the award for his work as chairman of Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal for more than 21 years.

He said: “The appeal has been going for 30 years now, raising funds for powered wheelchairs and state-of-the-art wheelchairs for children with varying degrees of disability, giving them the gift of independence.”

Mr Lee, who was joined by his wife Jarmila and daughters Gemma and Sarah at Buckingham Palace, said that he accepted the award on behalf of the golf club and the committee members in particular for all their fundraising efforts.
