A MUSICAL icon performed at Whitby Sports and Social Club’s folk night.

Show of Hands lead singer Steve Knightley performed at Whitby Sports and Social Club, Ellesmere Port, when the guest of honour was mayor of Ellesmere Port Angela Claydon.

The concert was promoted by volunteer organisers of the Hungry Horse Folk Club that meets every Thursday evening at the Whitby club.

They also organise the annual folk festival, Wirral Folk on the Coast, that will take place from June 7 to 10 at the same venue this year.

It was Steve Knightley’s second visit to the folk club having performed at its previous venue, The Rake, Little Stanney, in 2010.

His support act was Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin.

With his band Show of Hands, Knightley has performed three sell out concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and it was also a packed house in Whitby Sports and Social Club’s main concert hall.

Hungry Horse Guest Night Concerts take place at least once a month in the Oak Room and Singers and Musicians Nights on the other Thursdays in the President's Lounge.

The next concert in the main concert hall will take place on Friday, May 4, when the Houghton Weavers are the special guests. The headline act at the festival will be the iconic actress and singer Barbara Dickson.
