If your name is Carol or Annette, you may soon be one of a kind, because no parents gave their children these monikers last year, according to Office of National Statistics data.

Both names were were in the top 100 baby names for girls in 1964, but disappeared entirely from the 2014 list.

And it's not good news if you're named Sandra, Susan and Denise either, because these names are also losing popularity.

It comes after a set of parents named their newborn son Gary, in a bid to bring the name back into fashion since only 33 baby boys were named Gary in 2014.

The most popular baby names in the North West at the moment are Oliver and Amelia, with 990 babies given the former name and 735 the latter last year. Other most popular boys names are Jacob, Jack, Harry, Muhammad, Thomas, Charlie, Alfie, James and George.

For girls, the second most popular name in the region was Olivia - followed by Isla, Emily, Ava, Jessica, Poppy, Isabella, Sophie and Evie.
But the list can't hide the strong influence of popular culture in this day and age.

Many parents continue to name their children after characters in Game of Thrones, and last year there were 53 Khaleesis, 244 Aryas and 17 Tyrions born in England and Wales.

There were also 106 baby Khloes, 80 Kendalls, 35 Kourtneys and 19 Kims born to fans of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Elsewhere, the success of the name 'Rita' has mirrored the success of the pop star Rita Ora - with 65 sets of parents choosing the name in 2014.
Eleven babies were given the name 'Ronaldo', with four more called 'Messi'.
