A GROUP of friends from Ellesmere Port have taken to the netball court to score funds for a local cause that has touched all their lives.

The Chester Childbirth Appeal Netball Team donned their uniforms for the first time in September – complete with skirts emblazoned with the charity’s logo.

Members of the squad, who range in age from 18-50, discovered a shared desire to raise funds for the appeal while attending Back to Netball sessions at the Epic leisure centre.

“Some of us had not played netball for over 20 years,” said member Michelle Crilly.

“The team’s decision to represent the charity was based on a number of reasons, but the predominant one was that most of us have used the facilities provided by the charity, for a variety of reasons.

“We know we’re not the best players, but we’re enjoying it.”

The Chester Childbirth Appeal provides facilities and amenities for mothers and children at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Since 1991, it has raised £1m and paid for en suite delivery rooms, a water birth room and a space for bereaved parents to recover away from crying babies.

Members have already raised more than £900 toward a play area at the Countess of Chester Hospital by taking to the streets of Liverpool for the Santa Dash.

“We are looking for ideas to raise more funds for the charity, in particular a venue for an abseil,” said Michelle.

“Any offers or ideas would be most welcome from the public or companies to build awareness of a very worthy local charity and towards the play area on the children’s ward.”

The team is also keen to hear from companies who can provide sponsorship for kits or equipment – currently taken from players’ own purses.
