A DAD in Ellesmere Port was left worrying for the safety of two daughters who got caught in Hurricane Sandy.

Strong winds of up to 90mph and flooding battered the east coast of America with a million people ordered to evacuate New York City and New Jersey.

Among the 50 million who could be affected by the storms are former Ellesmere Port Catholic High School pupils Kirsty and Jennifer Leedham – sisters of Ellesmere Port’s Olympian at London 2012, Jo Leedham.

Hurricane Sandy killed more than 80 people as it swept through the Caribbean last week and left six million without power.

Kirsty Leedham, a student welfare assistant at the University of New Haven, who worked at Asda in Ellesmere Port, went to stay with her boyfriend in New Jersey after the university shut on Monday – but then lost power there.

Dad Kim said: “Her boyfriend came out from New Jersey. That’s a relief. they haven’t got it as bad in New Jersey.

“That’s one weight off my mind.”

Jennifer Leedham is head coach of basketball at Franklyn Pierce University just over the Massachusetts border in New Hampshire, which has been hit with strong winds and heavy rain.
