ELLESMERE Port’s own singing star Lee Latchford Evans is on top of the chart for the first time in a decade.

Nineties pop sensation Steps reached number one on Sunday with their greatest hits album The Ultimate Collection.

The band split in 2001 after dominating the charts for four years, but reunited this summer to film Sky Living reality series Steps: The Reunion.

Lee, 36, was born in the Countess of Chester Hospital and brought up in Ellesmere Port. He studied musical theatre at the Cheshire School of Music and Theatre before finding fame with Steps.

He had his first taste of fame as a youngster, performing in a pantomime of Robinson Crusoe at the town’s Civic Hall.

After Steps split Lee appeared in Grease in the West End and took part in a number of reality TV shows. He also formed and fronted his own band, The Latch.

Lee will be joining his four bandmates on a nationwide stadium tour next year, including a date at Liverpool Echo Arena, Liverpool, on April 4. Tickets are on sale now from 0844 800 3680.
