PLAYERS from the Ellesmere Port and Neston Special Olympics football team hosted a seven-a-side tournament at The HUB@Connexions youth centre.

The event, which involved teams from Belfast and Tranmere, was organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

It was a return tournament after AFC Dynamos, which is the name of the Ellesmere Port and Neston team, competed in Northern Ireland in April.

The Dynamos were victorious in Belfast but despite a fantastic performance were unable to repeat the feat and were beaten in the final by Irish team, The Brave Hearts.

Ellesmere Port mayor Tony Sherlock watched the tournament and presented the 40 players who took part with medals.

Corrina Thorley, chairwoman of Ellesmere Port and Neston Special Olympics, said: “We received a warm welcome from all the teams at the tournament in Belfast. The trip was a great opportunity for the DynamosŠto meet other players who, like them, are constantly overcoming theŠchallengesŠof having a disability.

“Some of the misconceptions of theŠsocial troubles in Northern Ireland wereŠlaid to rest. Most importantly lasting links andŠfriendships were forged and we hope will become stronger through future exchange visits.”

Cllr Sherlock said: “It was a fantastic day and the teams showed as much passion as professional players.”
