DOG ownership is a long-term commitment and should not be taken lightly, Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Andrew Miller has stressed before Christmas.

The MP is giving his support to the Dogs Trust’s annual campaign ‘A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas’.

Mr Miller said: “People must think carefully before taking on a dog, especially during the festive season. Dog ownership is a long-term commitment and shouldn’t be just an impulse buy.

“Sadly, the online sale of pets is making this an appealing option and many unscrupulous breeders are keen for a quick sale.

“I know that Dogs Trust and other animal welfare charities see an influx of unwanted pets being handed in to rehoming centres after Christmas.

“I hope that this year anyone buying a dog, or any other animal, takes on the lifetime responsibility not just the festive fun.”

On December 4, Mr Miller attended an event in Westminster organised by Dogs Trust to raise awareness of its campaign.

The event gave attendees the opportunity to open a window on the charity’s ‘12 Strays of Christmas’ Advent calendar and learn more about its campaign to encourage people to think carefully before taking on a dog, especially during the festive season.
