A music society is going for a double first at its upcoming concert on Saturday (April 26).

Following on from the success of its charity Christmas concert in December, when £400 was raised for Parkinsons UK, Ellesmere Port Music Society is getting to grips with Marcia Funebre Sulla Morte d'un Pappagallo otherwise A Funeral March on the Death of a Parrot by the French composer Charles Valentin Alkan.

One of Alkan’s more humorous works, it was written years before the famous Monty Python sketch.

The major work in the concert will be Mozart’s ever-popular Mass in C (The Great) made more unusual by a slightly longer version with added pieces to enhance the unfinished mass.

Both will be first performances for the society.

The concert, featuring the society chorus, will also have the 18th Century Sinfonia, under the baton of the society’s music director and conductor Lloyd Buck, playing their special period instruments to give an authentic 18th century sound to the performance.

The society says it aims to bring unusual and new music to Ellesmere Port as well as traditional repertoire.

“It is well worth going along to give these works a hearing,” said a spokesman.

The concert takes place on Saturday in the Civic Hall at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £13 balcony, £12 stalls, 18 and under free and £5 student on production of a valid SU card.

Tickets can be obtained through epmsonline.co.uk and epmsnews@virginmedia.com or will be available on the door on the day of the performance.
