ANDREW Miller MP has welcomed the Chancellor’s pre-Budget report as ‘the best economic approach for long-term stability’.

But prospective parliamentary candidate Stuart Penketh has hit out at Alistair Darling, condemning the report as a ‘cheap electioneering gimmick’.

Mr Miller said: “The Chancellor has had to make some tough choices but the pre-Budget report will protect vital frontline public services such as hospitals, the police and education, secure the country’s recovery and encourage growth. Its positive impact will certainly benefit local people.

“Our actions will not be painless, but nor will they be reckless. This is a balanced package that is the best economic approach for long-term stability and, above all, fair.”

However, Mr Penketh said: “This Chancellor and his predecessor Gordon Brown have presided over the biggest budget deficit in Britain’s peace-time history and have promised to keep up the reckless spending spree until just after the General Election.

“When this Government starts gambling with the national economy in an attempt to keep power then Labour and our current MP have lost the right to be in power.”

He added: “With Vauxhall saved, why does this Government think that increasing the costs on employers will have no effect on the company, just when we were hoping there would be an expansion of the workforce?”
