An Ellesmere Port man has packed his bags to follow in his great grandad’s footsteps and join the senior service.

The name of Thomas Edward Wells is remembered with many other fallen heroes on the town’s cenotaph.

But to local lad James Wells, 25, this is the name of his great grandfather who has inspired him to sign up for the Royal Navy.

After three years of training, including road running and punch bag training, James is following his dream and has headed off to Plymouth to join the Navy.

James has also decided to donate his boxing equipment to the ABC Boxing Club on Princes Road.

Managed by Carl Teasdale, the gym is a great place for young people to improve their health, fitness and discipline, he believes.

A presentation took place when his kit was officially handed over by borough councillor Tony Sherlock.

James explained he had always wanted to join the Royal Navy.

His advice to young people in the town is ‘decide what you want and strive to achieve it’.

“With determination you can achieve anything you set your mind to, I’m the proof,” he insists.

James hopes his equipment will help other young people achieve their goals through hard work and training.
