COUNCILLORS have slammed the ‘cavalier attitude’ of the council after it gave people seven days notice to vacate their council-owned garages.

The proposed demolition of garage sites deemed beyond repair, in Stoak Gardens and Carlyle Crescent, have led to concerns being expressed by Port councillors.

Councillors Justin Madders and Derek Bateman, both from Central & Westminster Ward, have been contacted by concerned residents on Monday after they had received legal notices advising them they have to vacate their garages in just seven days.

Councillors Derek Bateman, Paul Donovan and Justin Madders want a public meeting so residents can air their views.

They are concerned there will be no time for people using the garages to make alternative arrangements.

Cllr Paul Donovan said: “Yet again we see locally elected councillors and residents totally ignored.

“Garage users are being told there are no alternative garages that they can use locally.

“It will cause a displacement of vehicles on to already crowded estates.

“One person who contacted me has had the garage on the site over 40 years and has been given a week’s notice. The lack of thought and consultation is breathtaking as well as arrogant.”

Cllr Madders said: “The council has acted in a cavalier manner.

“In the past there would have been full consultation with tenants and there would have been adequate warning and time for people to make other arrangements.

“ It’s about time this council started behaving as if it was democratically accountable.”
