LADIES choir Fireflies will lend their voices to a one-off musical spectacular taking place in Chester Amphitheatre next month.

The Ellesmere Port-based ensemble will join singers, dancers, children and giants to perform an original anthem, Across the World, as part of a nationwide celebration.

The anthem, composed by Matt Baker and Helen Newall, tells the story of a Chester giant who – like an Olympic athlete in pursuit of gold – travels the world to find her dream.

Fireflies secretary Pat Tripney said the choir’s 55-60 members were looking forward to the chance to perform in the dramatic venue.

“We are very excited because we were asked to be one of the main choirs,” said Pat.

“I understand that the five main choirs are going to be wearing the colours of the five Olympic rings.”

Fireflies will be taking part in a one-day workshop, on top of their usual weekly rehearsals, to prepare for the ambitious performance.

The event is part of Music Nation, a weekend of music organised by the BBC and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to set the scene for the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad.

Ten choirs and 12 schools will take to the stage alongside soloists Sarra Cooper and Robert Clack, The Chester Schools’ Concert Band and Homegrown Dance Theatre.

The choirs involved are: Fireflies, A Handbag of Harmonies, The Spinney Choir, The Chester Ladies’ Choir, Frodsham and District Choral Society, Cantata, Tattenhall Community Choir, Highfield Male Voice Choir and Tarporley’s Decibellas.

The event takes place at 2pm on Saturday, March 3, and admission is free. Fireflies will also be performing at the Lord Mayor of Chester’s concert on March 10.
