A centenarian cites ‘a very occasional tipple’ among the secrets for her long life.

Doris Budd, known to many as Doll, lived for 60 years in Dudley Road, Ellesmere Port before moving to Newton in Chester in November 2000.

The eldest of eight children, she was born in Chester, although some of her younger years were spent in Eastham Village where her father managed the Co-op grocery store.

When the store was closed down, the family went to live in Bedford Avenue,Ellesmere Port, where the youngest three children were born and the rent was just £1 per week.

Doris’s early working life involved cooking at Jones’s ironworks in Cromwell Road and in her later years she was a supervisor over the cleaning section for the Civic Hall and other buildings for Ellesmere Port council.

Friends say she attributes her longevity to ‘love and laughter, good food and a very occasional tipple’!

She also cherishes the fond memories she has of her late husband Albert and the happy holidays they spent in Spain and Portugal, although they also often ventured into North Wales and the surrounding areas.

Doris celebrated her 100th birthday with many friends and family and was pleased to receive her special card from the Queen, which arrived by special delivery prior to her party celebration.

She was especially thrilled with her birthday cake, which held figures of herself and her faithful springer spaniel, Sally, who she sadly lost a few years ago.

Doris has a son and a daughter who each had three children and she now has 10 great grandchildren.
