MEMBERS of air cadet squadron will be on cloud nine when they celebrate their 70th anniversary this summer.

1074 (Ellesmere Port) Squadron Air Cadets will hold an open night on March 1 for any young people aged 13-17 who are interested in joining the squadron.

New cadets can look forward to activities such as flying, gliding, shooting, and competing in a range of sports and earning qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, BTECs and first aid.

New recruits will take part in a 16-week training programme which looks at subjects including leadership tasks, drill, first aid, sports and more.

The squadron meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9.30pm at squadron HQ on Coronation Road, Ellesmere Port.

Five new cadets are already due to start and places are limited, so places must be booked soon.

Flight Lieutenant Illston said: “We would also like to get some more people to join our civilian committee which is like the PTA in a school. The committee meets once a month and looks after the finances, fundraising and welfare of the cadets, and we are really keen to get some new faces involved.”

Ellesmere Port Air Cadets have also been given the Freedom of the City Of Liverpool.

Flight Lieutenant Karen Illston added: “We are absolutely delighted that Merseyside Wing has been awarded this honour.”

Ellesmere Port air cadets and staff have also taken part in celebrations for the 70th birthday of the Air Training Corps and are planning their own celebration for the squadron’s 70th anniversary. They are keen to hear from any ex-cadets or staff who would like to be involved in the celebrations.
