AIR cadets brought home a triple medal haul to Ellesmere Port.

On Sunday, April 22, 18 Ellesmere Port cadets represented the squadron at the Merseyside Wing Athletics competition at Bebington Oval.

Though the weather wasn’t on their side they still did well in a mixture of field and track events and three cadets took home medals.

Cpl Thomson won silver for discus, Cpl Calow also won silver in the 1,500m and Cdt Finlay won gold for the U15 boys javelin.

Cdt Finlay said: “What a great day! From the moment my alarm clock sounded to the beginning of my event I was full with confidence.

“It was wet, cold, windy and rainy, however, I still managed to throw my personal best of 37 metres and take the gold medal with a throw eight metres in front of second place and I got the furthest throw on the day.”

Cdt Finlay will represent Merseyside Wing at the Inter Wing athletics competition this month and will be striving to improve on the third place he received in the contest last year.

The officer in charge at the squadron, Warrant Officer Anna Jackson, said: “I am really proud of all the cadets today – they really came together as a team and to have three medals is a great achievement, well done to all the cadets who took part and thanks to the staff who got the team organised on the day.”

WO Jackson, who works with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, received a tweet on Twitter from Dame Kelly herself wishing the cadets well.

Cpl Calow not only won a medal at the athletics but was in the team for the Wales and West Region Air Cadets at the annual Inter Region Cross Country Competition at RAF Cranwell in March. He came 10th out of 20 cadets and second in his age group, winning a silver medal.
