Action Transport Theatre is to create a groundbreaking play to tackle homophobia in primary schools.

The theatre, based in Whitby Hall, Whitby Park is collaborating on the project with LGBT Youth North West.

It has received funding from Cheshire West and Chester Council’s ‘promoting equality and diversity’ fund to back the production.

The fund, open to voluntary and community organisations, aims to enable activities which eliminate discrimination and promote equality and diversity across the borough.

The project is inspired by a Dutch children’s book King and King which tells the story of two princes who fall in love and live happily ever after.

The show, called Happily Ever After, will tour to eight primary schools across Ellesmere Port and the region.

Teachers and families will be given an information pack about dealing with the subject of homophobia and homophobic bullying.

Rehearsals are due to start in June.

Almost two thirds of young people have experienced direct homophobic bullying in schools according a recent survey by the Stonewall charity.

Nine in 10 secondary school teachers and more than two in five primary school teachers are said to believe homophobic bullying occurs in their school with the word ‘gay’ often being used as an insult.

The charity Diversity Role Models reports that LGBT youths are six times more likely to commit suicide.

LGBT Youth North West said: “We are delighted to have the support of Cheshire West and Chester Council in helping us develop this piece of pioneering work across the county.

“We will introduce children to the concept of diversity at a young age.

“This will go a long way in reducing the negative experience of ‘coming out’ that most lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people experience during high school years.”

Cllr Razia Daniels (Con), Cheshire West and Chester’s equality and diversity champion, said: “I am pleased we are able to support this initiative which will help towards the council’s drive to challenge homophobic bullying and spread a positive message about diversity and acceptance.

“This will contribute to a more inclusive and safer school environment and better community life.”

The project will help to raise awareness around difference, respect and relationships to primary school children that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
