WREXHAM secured a second successive victory in the Avon Insurance League Cup group stages at the Racecourse last night to virtually guarantee progress into the knockout phase of the competition.
But opponents Kidderminster Harriers, who play their reserve team football two divisions below the Dragons, proved a harder nut to crack than Burnley, who were hammered 7-1 in a Premier Division clash at the Racecourse a week ago.
Carlos Edwards, who was outstanding in that game, went close to putting Wrexham ahead after two minutes, cutting inside before hitting a low shot that John Danby did well to reach.
It was to be another 33 minutes before the Harriers' goalkeeper was called into action again as both sides struggled to come to terms with the wet and slippery conditions underfoot.
The visitors also had an early chance, Matt Lewis forcing a save from David Walsh after 12 minutes, but both defences were on top for long spells until Edwards played a one-two with Craig Faulconbridge after 35 minutes only to volley wide from 12 yards.
Within three minutes, though, the home side went ahead when Faulconbridge was tripped in the penalty area by Lee Aires and Martyn Chalk converted the penalty.
A lapse of concentration by Walsh almost gifted Kidderminster an equaliser after 51 minutes when the 'keeper took his eyes off a weak header from Drewe Broughton and spilled it, the ball trickling behind for a corner and only another fine save by Danby denied Shaun Pejic a rare goal when he got forward to meet an Edwards centre.
Wrexham increased their lead on the hour, Edwards stepping over Michael Blackwood's low cross for Chalk to double his tally with a well-struck effort from 15 yards.
But the visitors pulled one back after 67 minutes through Lewis and Walsh, and then needed a good save from substitute Tony Bird.
Kidderminster fought hard to get back on level terms in the closing stages, only to concede a third, when Michael Blackwood scored in the final minute.
