PEDAL power propelled a team of cyclists between Sainsbury’s stores in Inverness and Ellesmere Port.

Six brave men set off on bicycles from the supermarket’s most northerly branch in Nairn, Inverness, Scotland on April 7, and arrived six days and 485 miles later at the Ellesmere Port store on Saturday.

Scott Cooper, Sam Godsell, Carl Truman, Andy Kempster and Nick Newbolt from the Ellesmere Port store and Simon Gee from the Heswall store rode between 70-90 miles a day to raise funds for The Alzheimers Society and the Brain Tumour Charity.

The riders chose the charities as people close to them have been affected by both illnesses.

The riders arrived back at 1pm on Saturday to a rapturous welcome from friends, family and colleagues.

All five riders completed the journey, with a team of two support staff accompanying them.

Steve Jones, father of Chester champion fundraiser Hannah Jones, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008, said: “They faced strong headwinds through Scotland and the Lake District and beat the weather to arrive home as planned.

“I was at the finish to meet them and they were all fantastic and in great spirits.

“The final total is still to be announced and will attract match funding from Sainsburys as well.

“On behalf of the Brain Tumour Charity we would like to thank all of those who completed the ride, and their families for supporting them through the many hours of training.”
