A great-grandmother from Cuddington who credits her family with keeping her active has turned 100-years-old.

Doris Bates, of Grange Road, celebrated her birthday with her friends and family, on Sunday, December 8.

Doris said: “I’m delighted to have reached 100 years old and would like to thank everyone who has sent such kind messages of congratulations. It’s been lovely to look back and reminisce and I certainly have a lot of fond memories of my life.”

Walking and cooking have both been keen interests for Doris and she is still a member of the Royal British Legion – but it is her family that remains her main hobby.

Doris has two children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

“It’s having people around me, especially the young great grandchildren in my family, that has helped keep me so active and healthy,” she Doris.

Born in Lower Broughton, Salford, Doris started work at the age of 14 as a sewing machinist and managed to sew her finger while making a shirt one day.

Having lived in Cuddington for 53 years, Doris has seen the village’s evolution.

“When I first arrived in Cuddington there were only four houses on Cherry Lane with fields surrounding them and there were no shops as they were just starting on the building work so I’ve seen the area change so much over the years,” she said.

Doris has lived in her Weaver Vale Housing Trust bungalow since 2001 and to mark the special milestone Trust Chief Executive Steve Jennings and Director of Property Services Graham Roberts visited her to present a special bouquet of flowers.

Steve said: “It has been lovely to congratulate Doris and to hear the fantastic stories she has about her life. It is also inspiring to see someone who is still so active as they reach 100 years old.”
