CANAL enthusiasts have the chance to learn how to make traditional fenders for canal boats at the National Waterways Museum in November.

A fender-making course is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, November 19 and 20, taught by Dave Walker.

Students can make a couple of side fenders, a short button, a deck matt and try splicing mooring lines.

The two-day course is £65, which includes all the materials needed to make the fenders, the matt and the turks-heads, plus museum entry.

There are only six places available – to book, call 0151 355 5017. A £25 deposit is needed, with cheques payable to ‘Boat Museum Society’.

Phil Speight visits for a two-day roses and castles painting course on Saturday and Sunday, November 26 and 27.

It costs £100 and trays, brushes and materials are provided. The ticket includes weekend museum admission.
