CHESHIRE County Council spokesman Ian CallisterŠ said there had been intense lobbying of Government for the one-council-for-Cheshire case and the publication of draft legislation for the two-councils option was “not in itself” an indication of the final outcome.

He said: “It should be remembered that Whitehall ŠvoicedŠ its concerns about risks attached to the affordability criteria in respect of a split Cheshire and this anxiety could not have been eased Šby the results of Štwo comprehensive financial examinations of that case.

“The dismal prospect of a £103m cost to ratepayers; disruption or cuts to excellent services and the loss of a county regionŠ strong enough to represent allŠ our communities provides further ample grounds for acute concern.

“The results of the Government’s stakeholder consultationŠ reflected overwhelming opposition to partition, fromŠ all sections of the community and a “great majority” support a single united county authority.”
